    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Ensign Joseph Behl (NSN: 0-379052), United States Naval Reserve, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flights in operations against the enemy in the vicinity of Iwo Jima, Tokyo, Kyushu, and the Nansei Shoto. As pilot of a carrier-based Torpedo Bomber during the period 20 February 1945 to 17 May 1945, he participated in twenty strikes against enemy shipping and ground installations, inflicting extensive damage. His skill and courage were at all times inspiring and in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Ensign Joseph Behl (NSN: 0-379052), United States Naval Reserve, for extraordinary heroism in operations against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a carrier-based Navy Torpedo Plane in Torpedo Squadron SEVENTEEN (VT-17), attached to the U.S.S. HORNET (CV-12), in action against enemy Japanese forces in the Kure Bay Area of Honshu, Japan, on 19 March 1945. In the face of extremely intense anti-aircraft fire, Ensign Behl piloted his plane in a glide bombing attack on an enemy aircraft carrier scoring two direct hits with his bombs. His skill and courage were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Navy.
