The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Ensign William Wesley Barnes, Jr. (NSN: 0-83902), United States Naval Reserve, for extraordinary achievement in aerial combat as Pilot of a carrier-based Navy Fighter Plane in Fighting Squadron THREE (VF-3), attached to the U.S.S. YORKTOWN (CV-5), in action with enemy Japanese forces in the Battle of the Coral Sea, 7 May 1942. On the evening of that date, Ensign Barnes participated in fighter action which resulted in the dispersal of enemy Japanese scouting aircraft in contact with our forces. His zeal and determination during this action carried him into the area of our own aircraft fire against enemy planes which wounded him and damaged his plane. In spite of this, he displayed great skill and courage in bringing his plane back to the ship and landing safely on board.
