John Wilson graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1860. In his capacity in charge of many public works in Washington, D.C., he was involved in the completion of the Washington Monument. He was Superintendant of the U.S. Military Academy from 1889 to 1893, and retired as a U.S. Army Brigadier General.

    The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to First Lieutenant (Corps of Engineers) John Moulder Wilson, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 6 August 1862, while serving with U.S. Engineers, in action at Malvern Hill, Virginia. First Lieutenant Wilson remained on duty, while suffering from an acute illness and very weak, and participated in the action of that date. A few days previous he had been transferred to a staff corps, but preferred to remain until the close of the campaign, taking part in several actions.
