The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Third Gold Star in lieu of a Fourth Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Rex Lesourd Bantz (NSN: 0-157177), United States Navy, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight in the Pacific Area during the period from 22 September 1944 to 25 October 1944. Lieutenant Bantz completed his fortieth flight in a combat area where enemy anti-aircraft fire was expected to be effective or where enemy aircraft patrols usually occurred. His conduct throughout has distinguished him among those performing duties of the same character. The below listed flights were used as the basis for the award of the Gold Star in lieu of a 3d Distinguished Flying Cross:
22 September 1944 – Strike-Enemy Shipping, Manila Harbor, Philippine Islands
5 October 1944 – Strike-Enemy Shipping, Okinawa Shima
12 October 1944 – Strike-enemy Airfield, Formosa
13 October 1944- Strike, Enemy Installations, Formosa
25 October 1944-Strike Enemy Force, Cape Egano, Philippine Islands
