The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Lieutenant George Fried, United States Naval Reserve, for extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty in the line of his profession while Commanding the Steamship S.S. PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT, when that vessel was engaged in the rescue of the crew of the British steamships ANTINOE during a hurricane from 24 to 28 January, 1926. The seamanship, courage and professional ability displayed during a long struggle with a violent gale, snow and ice, is of the highest order and in accordance of the best traditions of those men who go to sea. Lieutenant Fried’s actions at all times were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
