    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Commander Anthony Leo Danis, United States Navy, for distinguished service in line of his profession as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. KEARNEY (DD-432), in bringing his ship safely to port, under most difficult circumstances, after that vessel was torpedoed on 17 October 1941. Captain Danis skillfully utilized every item of equipment to the greatest advantage and succeeded in keeping his ship afloat and in restoring her fighting efficiency. His conduct throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the Navy of the United States.
