The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Navy Cross (Posthumously) to Lieutenant Gilbert Ellis Miller (NSN: 0-130161), United States Navy, for extraordinary heroism in operations against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a Land-Based Navy Patrol Plane in Patrol-Bombing Squadron ONE HUNDRED TWENTY-FOUR (VPB-124), during operations against enemy Japanese air, sea and land forces in the Korea and North China Areas, on 20 and 25 June 1945, and 2 and 15 July 1945. Pressing home vigorous bombing and strafing attacks despite severe enemy anti-aircraft fire, Lieutenant Miller succeeded in sinking one enemy steamer and a lugger, in damaging an enemy merchantman, and in engaging and shooting down two of an outnumbering force of six hostile fighter planes. Subsequently leading a four-plane flight in a night attack along the Kuang Pu Chiang River in Shanghai, he again braved heavy enemy anti-aircraft fire to bomb and strafe enemy shipping and harbor installations, scoring several bomb hits and starting extensive fires. His daring airmanship and unswerving devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
