The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Lieutenant [then Lieutenant, Junior Grade] Thomas Kinaszczuk, United States Naval Reserve, for extraordinary heroism in operations against the enemy while serving as Commander of a Navy Patrol Plane in Patrol-Bombing Squadron ONE HUNDRED TWENTY-FIVE (VPB-123), in offensive action against an enemy submarine off Cape Race, Newfoundland, on 27 April 1943. Sighting the fully surfaced hostile craft proceeding at high speed to intercept the convoy he was covering, Lieutenant Kinaszczuk skillfully maneuvered his plane for maximum striking power and pressed home a bold and determined attack in the face of heavy anti-aircraft fire. Despite damage to his plane, he continued his assault with devastating force and, when the submarine attempted to submerge, accurately released four bombs from the extremely low altitude of 25 feet, completely destroying the craft before she could escape. Lieutenant Kinaszczuk’s superb airmanship, grim determination and courageous devotion to duty in the face of grave peril were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
