The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Commander Herbert Lollis Jukes, United States Navy, for extraordinary heroism in the line of his profession as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. KINGFISH (SS-234), in action on 3 and 7 January, during the SIXTH War Patrol of that submarine in enemy Japanese-controlled waters of the Southwest Pacific Area. In a series of tenacious, daring attacks, often in hazardous shoal waters, Commander Jukes skillfully launched his devastating torpedoes against the enemy’s vital life lines of supply and succeeded in sinking or extensively damaging five valuable ships, for a total of nearly 37,000 tons. Constantly aggressive and fearless in the face of severe countermeasures, Commander Jukes accomplished the destruction of critical enemy shipping and supplies, thus contributing directly to our successful prosecution of the war. His inspiring conduct and the courageous performance of duty of his officers and men were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
