The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Commander John Daniel Crowley, United States Navy, for extraordinary heroism in the line of his profession as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. FLIER (SS-250), on the FIRST War Patrol of that submarine during the period 21 May 1944 to 5 July 1944, in enemy controlled waters west of Luzon in the Philippine Islands. Highly aggressive and determined in tracking the enemy, Commander Crowley launched his attacks daringly to inflict heavy loss on the Japanese in thousands of tons of valuable shipping sunk or damaged. His outstanding courage and gallant leadership were an inspiration to the intrepid officers and men under his command and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
