The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Major General Harry N. Thompson, Royal British Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in a position of great responsibility to the Government of the United States, during World War I. An eminent Medical Officer, and as Director of the Medical Service, 1st British Field Army in France, General Thompson placed his time and energy at the disposal of the American Expeditionary Forces. The Sanitary School maintained in his Army for teaching front-line medical requirements was utilized for the instruction of the American Medical Officers sent to him by classes. The observation and experience gained by these student officers under his able supervision and guidance eventually resulted in the saving of lives of many American wounded.
