The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Surgeon Major, First Class Marie J. P. Marcombe, French Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in a position of great responsibility to the Government of the United States, during World War I. As Regulating Medical Officer at Le Bourget, France, Surgeon Major, First Class, Marcombe performed highly responsible duties with conspicuous success. When the number of our wounded from the operations in the vicinity of Chateau-Thierry and Soissons became so large that our transportation facilities proved inadequate, he relieved the critical situation by placing French trains at our disposal and personally directed their operations. He also furnished supplies for American patients, cooperated in selecting advantageous evacuation points, and in numerous other ways made himself the instrumentality for saving many American lives and alleviating much suffering, thereby rendering services of incalculable value to the American Expeditionary Forces.
