The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Brigadier General Maurice G. Gamelin, French Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in a position of great responsibility to the Government of the United States, during World War I. As Commander of the 9th French Division of Infantry, General Gamelin displayed conspicuous military attainments and most loyal devotion to the allied cause. He assigned a large number of French officers and noncommissioned officers as instructors, prepared a complete program of final training, cooperated with our personnel, and carefully supervised the training of the 32d Division during its training period from 16 May to 21 July 1918. By his important efforts he has rendered invaluable services to the American Expeditionary Forces.
