The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Major General Richard Ewart, Royal British Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in a position of great responsibility to the Government of the United States, during World War I. As Senior British Member of the Interallied Commission on the Repatriation of Prisoners of War, General Ewart has rendered conspicuous service to the United States and the allied Governments in connection with the sustenance, care, and homeward transportation of American and allied prisoners released by the armistice. He has at all times displayed a personal interest and supervising influence which resulted in speedy and comfortable repatriation of prisoners of war.
