The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Colonel John Charteris, Royal British Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in a position of great responsibility to the Government of the United States, during World War I. As Brigadier General of Intelligence at British General Headquarters, Colonel Charteris rendered most valuable service to the American Expeditionary Forces during the early period of the organization of the staff by placing every facility at the disposal of the American staff officers who were sent to British General Headquarters for the purpose of instruction. He displayed military attainments of high order, tireless energy, and marked zeal in the performance of his exacting duties. He was at all times tactful and proved himself a loyal friend.
