The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Lieutenant General Charles H. Burtchaell, Royal British Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in a position of great responsibility to the Government of the United States, during World War I. As Director General of Medical Service, British Expeditionary Forces, General Burtchaell displayed untiring zeal, eminent talents, and broad experience in providing adequate hospitalization and evacuation facilities for the sick and wounded of the American troops serving with the British Armies. His individual efforts counted largely in enabling the American Medical Service to function efficiently.
