The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Lieutenant Colonel (Field Artillery) Pierpont L. Stackpole, United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility during World War I. As Aide-de-Camp to Lieutenant General Hunter Liggett, U.S. Army, Lieutenant Colonel Stackpole rendered exceptional services during the entire time that the latter Commanded the 1st Army Corps, the 1st Army, and the 3d Army. By his military attainments and pronounced ability he proved to be a most important factor in the successes of the corps and also of the armies.
