The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Chief Nurse Edith A. Mury (Kershaw), United States Army Nurse Corps, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility during World War I. As Chief Nurse on duty at the Nurses’ Mobilization Station, Ellis Island, New York, during the early period of the World War, Chief Nurse Mury (now Mrs. Edith A. Kershaw) rendered invaluable assistance to the Medical Department by instructing newly appointed chief nurses before embarkation for overseas, and through her untiring energy and unusual capabilities set a splendid example for all who came in contact with her. Later, as Assistant Superintendent, in the Office of the Surgeon General, she contributed services of high value in supervising the demobilization of the Army Nurse Corps.
