The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Major (Cavalry) John G. McDonald, United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility during World War I. As Provost Marshal, 1st Army, during the Meuse-Argonne offensive, Major McDonald was responsible for the maintenance of order in the extensive Army area in rear of corps areas, for the apprehension of stragglers and wrongdoers in that area, and for the Military Police of areas relinquished by each corps as a consequence of the rapid advance of the corps of the 1st Army after 1 November 1918. Due to his tact, resourcefulness, and marked efficiency he accomplished all of his missions in a highly meritorious manner, thereby contributing materially to the successes of the 1st Army.
