The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Edward G. McCleave, United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility during World War I. Serving as Assistant to the Assistant Chief of Staff, G-4, Paris Group and 1st Army, from January to December 1918, Lieutenant Colonel McCleave displayed great initiative, devotion to duty, and executive ability during the operations in and around Chateau-Thierry in June and July, while the divisions of the American Army were serving with the 6th French Army and during the St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne operations of the 1st Army, he assisted in the organization of the sections and in a position of great responsibility contributed materially to the successful accomplishments of the supply of the troops engaged in those operations.
