The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Colonel (Medical Corps) Henry H. M. Lyle, United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility during World War I, as Director of the Army Evacuation Ambulance Companies and Sections of the 1st Army of the American Expeditionary Forces, a position of great responsibility. During the St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne offensives he so directed the functioning of the ambulances that, in spite of the great shortage of these, he was able at all times to transport the wounded expeditiously, thereby saving many lives and enhancing the morale of the combatant troops. By his eminent surgical skill he has devised a new practical method for the treatment of gunshot fractures. He has rendered service of much value.
