The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to First Lieutenant Grace E. Leonard, United States Army Nurse Corps, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility during World War I. As Assistant Director of the Nursing Service, American Expeditionary Forces, First Lieutenant Leonard rendered invaluable assistance at the Headquarters of Base Section No. 3. She supervised all nursing activities of the United States Army hospitals established in England, and in many ways promoted the general welfare of the nursing staff and the sick and wounded under their care.
