The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Colonel (Field Artillery) Raymond E. Lee, United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility during World War I. As Executive Officer to the Chief of Field Artillery, from 1 September 1918 to the present time, Colonel Lee acted as Chief of Field Artillery for a period of about 10 days prior to the armistice during the absence of the Chief of Field Artillery. After the armistice he successfully planned and executed the demobilization of the commissioned personnel of his arm and also organized and conducted the Field Artillery section of the Officers’ Reserve Corps in a most effective manner.
