The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Colonel (Field Artillery) Conrad H. Lanza, United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility during World War I. As Chief of the Operations Section, Army Artillery, 1st Army, American Expeditionary Forces, Colonel Lanza exhibited a high order of ability and judgment. By his clear tactical conception of complex situations, by his exercise of initiative, by his untiring energy, and by his self-sacrificing devotion to duty, he contributed in a marked degree to the successful employment of all of the artillery of the 1st Army.
