The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Lieutenant Colonel (Corps of Engineers) George W. Knight, United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility during World War I. Near Bethincourt, France, on 25 September 1918, Lieutenant Colonel Knight was assigned the task of placing foot bridges over Forges River and cutting the wire in front of the enemy positions. In this his inspiring leadership and constant supervision were conspicuous. Later he organized the regiment for the November 1 offensive, which entailed the building of nine bridges, every one of which was completed in time for the Artillery to keep pace with the Infantry. His organization of the work at hand enabled the advance to proceed without delay and also enabled the Infantry to have the support of the Artillery and to keep in close touch with their transport.
