The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Sergeant John Kiggins, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 24 November 1863, while serving with Company D, 149th New York Infantry, in action at Lookout Mountain, Tennessee. Sergeant Kiggins waved the colors to save the lives of the men who were being fired upon by their own batteries, and thereby drew upon himself a concentrated fire from the enemy.
