The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Max Bruce Garber, United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility during World War I. Lieutenant Colonel Garber commanded with marked distinction the 59th Infantry during the attack on the Vesle. In this command he displayed those high qualities of ability, leadership, and personal courage that marked him as a determining factor in the successes achieved by the 4th Division.
