The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major General Charles Stewart Farnsworth, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding General, 37th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Montfaucon, France, 28 September 1918, in coming up to within four hundred yards of the front lines on horseback under an intense artillery bombardment. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Major General Farnsworth, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Major General Charles Stewart Farnsworth, United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility during World War I. In command of the 37th Division, General Farnsworth’s efficient leadership and military ability were important factors in the successful operations in the Meuse-Argonne offensive, and later proved their worth when this division served with the French and Belgian forces in Belgium.
