The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, 20 July 1942, takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Brigadier General Charles Frost Craig (ASN: 0-7231), United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services in the South Pacific Area from 10 June 1942 to 6 August 1943. As Chief of Staff of the 37th Infantry Division in the Fiji Islands, working also with civilian authorities and allied troops, he carried out his difficult assignments in a manner which not only brought great credit to himself and his unit, but enhanced the reputation of the American authorities at the island base. Later, as assistant to the Division Commander, he exerted the utmost energy in maintaining the division at a high level of efficiency. While his division was engaged in combat on New Georgia, he was responsible for coordinating operation in behalf of the division commander. He made frequent front-line inspections and in so doing exposed himself to the observation and fire of the enemy. Brigadier General Craig’s wise counsel, zeal, and efficiency contributed immeasurably to the success of his division in the campaign. The singularly distinctive accomplishments of Brigadier General Craig and his dedicated contributions in the service of his country reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Army.
