The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Lieutenant Colonel (Medical Corps) Walter B. Cannon, United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility during World War I. As Director of Physiological Research for the American Expeditionary Forces in France, Lieutenant Colonel Cannon’s activities in connection with the development of a standard method for the resuscitation of the wounded and in organizing, instructing, and directing the work of shock teams in hospitals at the front reflected professional skill and judgment of the highest order and resulted in saving many lives.
