By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Colonel (Cavalry) Christian A. Bach, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Colonel Bach distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving as Chief of Staff, 4th Infantry Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Hautevesnes, France, 18 July 1918, in voluntarily undertaking a reconnaissance.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Colonel (Cavalry) Christian A. Bach, United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility during World War I. As Chief of Staff of the 4th Division, since its organization, Colonel Bach has performed his duties with the utmost loyalty, excellent judgment, and tireless energy, both during the training period and in actual combat. To his energy and military ability is due in not small degree the excellent record of his division in the fighting on the Vesle River and during the Meuse-Argonne offensive.
