The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Rodney A. Scalise, United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Special Forces Medic with Operational Detachment Alpha 325 (ODA-325), 1st Battalion, 3d Special Forces Group (Airborne), Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force-Afghanistan, during combat operations in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM, on 19 August 2006, in Afghanistan. Staff Sergeant Scalise’s personal courage and commitment to mission accomplishment in a combat zone under the most extreme circumstances greatly contributed to the success of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. During this period, he distinguished himself by saving the life of a fellow Soldier while in heavy contact with a numerically superior enemy force. Staff Sergeant Scalise’s actions are in keeping with the finest traditions of military service, reflecting great credit upon himself and upholding the highest traditions of the United States Army.
