The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Specialist Christopher N. Fernandez, United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Battery A, 1st Battalion, 21st Field Artillery, 1st Cavalry Division, engaged in conflict with hostile forces in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM, in Iraq. Specialist Fernandez distinguished himself by heroic actions on 5 May 2004, while serving as a Machine Gunner. Following an Improvised Explosive Device attack, his unit came under a barrage of enemy fire. He took up a dangerously exposed position, providing automatic fire to protect the casualty recovery team. His complete disregard for personal safety enabled him to provide effective suppressive fire, averting further loss of life. Specialist Fernandez’ heroic and selfless actions bring great credit upon himself, 1st Cavalry Division, Multi-National Force Iraq, and the United States Army.
