The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal in lieu of the Certificate of Merit previously issued to Private Daniel O’Keefe, United States Army, for heroic conduct as a member of Battery B, 7th Artillery Regiment, in rescuing from drowning a corporal of his battery who fell overboard from the tugboat ALERT in Long Island Sound, on 13 April 1900, while the boat was plying between New London, Connecticut, and the islands.
