The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to First Lieutenant (Medical Corps) Louis M. Maus, United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services on the Belle Fourche River, North Dakota, on 5 November 1877, in that while serving as Assistant Surgeon with a detachment suddenly surrounded by an overwhelming force of hostile Sioux Indians, First Lieutenant Maus succeeded in extricating the party from a most perilous position.
