The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Distinguished Service Medal to Rear Admiral Austin Melvin Knight, United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious service in a duty of great responsibility as Commander in Chief of the Atlantic Fleet in connection with Allied operations carried out at and near Vladivostok and in northeastern Siberia during World War I.
