The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal in lieu of the Certificate of Merit previously issued to First Sergeant Thomas Johnson, United States Army, for pursuing and disarming an enlisted man bent on murdering his first sergeant at Camp McGrath, Batangas, Philippine Islands, on 22 August 1912, while serving as a member of Company I, 24th Infantry Regiment.
