The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class William H. Hessdeffer (ASN: 35677526), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 319th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 15 November 1944 in France. In an attack near Chemery, France, when his squad leader was wounded, Private First Class Hessdeffer, a rifleman, assumed command of his squad and, through sound tactical knowledge, led his comrades in successfully reducing an enemy strong point. Though wounded, he carried on and was an inspiration to his comrades by his audacious aggressiveness. Private First Class Hessdeffer’s courage, initiative, and inspirational leadership were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
