The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal in lieu of the Certificate of Merit previously issued to Corporal Arthur Fearnley, United States Army, for courage and tenacity of purpose in the face of dangers both known and unknown while searching for a comrade who had been lost in the Koolan Range, Oahu, Hawaii, on 8 April 1914, while serving as a member of the 75th Company, Coast Artillery Corps.
