The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal in lieu of the Certificate of Merit previously issued to Corporal Lyle G. Farmer, United States Army, for disregarding personal risk and danger in saving Miss Eleanor Bourgeois from drowning in the artificial lake at City Park, New Orleans, Louisiana, on 27 April 1918, while serving as a member of Company I, 43d Infantry Regiment.
