The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal in lieu of the Certificate of Merit previously issued to Private Levi Anderson, United States Army, for risking his life in going to the rescue of a drowning comrade on 6 July 1911, at Mallets Bay, near Fort Ethan Allen, Vermont, while serving as a member of Troop D, 10th Cavalry Regiment.
