The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Clarence Henry Zech, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism while serving with 337th Ambulance Company, 339th Infantry, 85th Division (Detachment in North Russia), in action near Kadish, Russia, September 27 – 28, 1918. Acting as stretcher bearer to two companies of infantry in action against the Bolsheviks, Private Zech for two days and nights made his way through swamps and forests to administer first aid and carry wounded to the dressing station. His work at all times was accomplished under sweeping machine-gun and intense artillery fire, making it necessary for him to crawl on his hands and knees for long distances.
