The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Private James Robert Evans, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 5 May 1864, while serving with Company H, 62d New York Infantry, in action during the Wilderness Campaign, Virginia. Private Evans went out in front of the line under a fierce fire and, in the face of the rapidly advancing enemy, rescued the regimental flag with which the Color Bearer had fallen.
