The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Colonel James Martinus Schoonmaker, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 19 September 1864, while serving with 14th Pennsylvania Cavalry, in action at Winchester, Virginia. At a critical period, Colonel Schoonmaker gallantly led a cavalry charge against the left of the enemy’s line of battle, drove the enemy out of his works, and captured many prisoners.
