The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Medical Corps) William F. Lewis, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism while serving with Medical Corps, in action near Laksamana Usap’s Cotta, island of Jolo, Philippine Islands, 7 January 1905. During the attack on the Cotta, Captain Lewis showed great gallantry and courage when he went into the line of fire to the assistance of a badly wounded soldier, whom he rescued and carried to the dressing station, where the man later died.
