The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant James Howarth, British Army, for extraordinary heroism while serving with Liverpool Regiment, in action near Kadish, Russia, 7 October 1918. Sergeant Howarth gallantly led his platoon in five successive attacks upon a strongly fortified line of blockhouses. During the withdrawal he exposed himself to heavy fire in order to direct the fire of a Lewis gun crew in order to secure the safe evacuation of his wounded.
