The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Henry Leavenworth Harris, Jr., United States Army, for extraordinary heroism while serving with 22d Infantry, in action against an armed enemy at the capture of Peruka-Utig’s Cotta, island of Jolo, Philippine Islands, 3 May 1905. Lieutenant Harris gallantly and fearlessly directed the movements of the most exposed part of the firing line, and, without regard for his personal safety, was the first man to enter the cotta, a stronghold of the enemy, where it was expected that a last stubborn stand would be made by the insurgents.
