The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant George DeBattista, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism while serving with Company D, 31st Infantry, American Expeditionary Forces (Siberia), in action near Kazanka, Siberia, 13 July 1919. Sergeant DeBattista led a patrol of eight men through enemy country to Kazanka, about 10 miles distance from camp, and returned with an accurate report of enemy activities in the town. The circumstances governing at the time required extraordinary daring and skill on the part of Sergeant DeBattista in order to carry out the instructions given him.
