The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Alexander Zambryski (ASN: 2719080), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company M, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Mousson, France, 7 November 1918. While making a reconnaissance of a destroyed bridge, over the River Meuse, a member of the patrol had his leg broken by machine-gun fire and fell into the river. Despite the fact that four enemy machine-guns were firing point blank on the spot, at a distance of less than 100 yards, Private Zambryski volunteered and went to the rescue of his comrade and succeeded single-handed in recovering his comrade while under severe fire, and taking him to a place of safety.
