The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry) Allan J. MacDougall, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 308th Infantry Regiment, 77th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in the Argonne Forest, France, 4 October 1918. Leading three companies to the aid of a surrounded battalion, Captain MacDougall was rendered unconscious by a shell burst, but, upon recovery, refused treatment until properly relieved.
